The PS3 video game console receives occasional system software updates from Sony. These firmwares are known as Official firmware (OFW). All systems are prompted to update to it in order to play online, Sony Entertainment Network (SEN)

Demonstration mode, also known as SEX is the firmware shops would use on the console while it's on display. The main purpose of kiosk firmware is to try out games, and to see features available. Nothing can be installed on it.

There is a method to convert a console running demo mode to official firmware. Reverters are update files which must be installed via recovery mode in order to remove the shop firmware, usually described as "Promotional-to-Retail".
